Cape Lookout has only four rivals in Lost in the Fog
OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Always a Suspect and Cape Lookout, both entered in Saturday’s $100,000 Marylander Stakes for 2-year-olds going seven furlongs at Laurel, also were entered for Sunday’s $100,000 Lost in the Fog Stakes for 3-year-olds going six furlongs at Aqueduct.
Since the racing office carded the Lost in the Fog on Thursday with only five horses, it is expected that both of those horses will run in the race, the third of nine here Sunday. Always a Suspect, trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, was always pointing to this race but was entered in the Marylander in the event that the Lost in the Fog was not carded. The Lost in the Fog was carded after Michael Trombetta opted to run Cape Lookout in the race. Trombetta has the maiden Alive entered in the Marylander.
Trombetta said Thursday that as long as all is well with both horses, he will split them up.
Cape Lookout, who drew the rail for the Lost in the Fog, won a maiden race at Parx by 1 1/2 lengths on Dec. 12 in his fifth start. Cape Lookout had a third and three seconds to begin his career. On Tuesday, Cape Lookout worked a half-mile in 48 at the Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland.
“His workout the other day was very good,” Trombetta said Thursday by phone from Maryland. “That’s kind of what prompted me to go this way. This time of year, these stakes are not a whole heck of a lot different than an a-other-than. With a short field, for that kind of money, it’s worth a try.”
Alex Cintron will ride Cape Lookout.
Always a Suspect beat Caledonian by a neck in a starter allowance here on Nov. 24. Both of those horses and last-place finisher Mabrouk were entered in the Lost in the Fog. Butch Walker, a debut winner at Monmouth on Sept. 24 for trainer Joe Orseno, completes the field.
