Cap Sup may go favored in Pelican

Four Leaf Chief has accomplished more than all of his rivals in Saturday night’s $100,000 Pelican at Delta Downs, but he might not go favored in the feature.
Cat Sup, who last month finished in front of Four Leaf Chief, will get good support for his effort, as well as his natural speed – which could give him a tactical advantage over the late-running Four Leaf Chief – his useful post, and his strong recent Beyer Speed Figures.
The Pelican is restricted to 3-year-olds bred in Louisiana. The 7 1/2-furlong race will be run around two turns.

KEY CONTENDERS
Four Leaf Chief (Last 3 Beyers: 79-21-78)
◗ He’s a two-time stakes winner, giving him the best credentials in the Pelican. Four Leaf Chief captured the $50,000 Louisiana Cup Juvenile at six furlongs at Louisiana Downs in his second career start Aug. 2 and then won his two-turn debut in the $150,000 Louisiana Legacy on Nov. 22.

◗ Enters the Pelican off a fourth-place finish in the $125,000 Premier Night Prince at Delta. He found himself farther off the pace than usual, closing from 15 lengths back to finish 1 1/2 lengths behind the winner, the undefeated Mr. L.S. Shoe. Cat Sup was second by a head in the seven-furlong race.
◗ Four Leaf Chief will break from post 7 in a field of eight. Gerard Melancon has the mount for trainer Steve Flint.
