Canterbury: Rematch on tap

David M. Miller|Aug 09, 2007

In what is shaping up as a rematch between the top two finishers from last year's renewal, Dimple Pinch returns to Canterbury Park Saturday to face Katy Smiles in the $45,000 Dean Kutz Stakes.

Dimple Pinch prevailed with a strong late move in last year's renewal of the Kutz. A gray daughter of Smoke Glacken, Dimple Pinch has started five times this year, with her last victory coming over optional claiming foes at Oaklawn Park. In her most recent outing, Dimple Pinch finished third with her typical late move in the Grade 3 Chicago BC Handicap at Arlington. Derek Bell, who was aboard Dimple Pinch in last year's renewal of the Kutz, has the assignment for trainer Mac Robertson.

Katy Smiles has been a horse for the course at Canterbury since winning her maiden here as a 2-year-old in 2004. Purchased privately by her current connections after her maiden win, Katy Smiles has compiled an impressive record at Canterbury, winning 7 of 10 starts, including the Kutz Stakes in 2005. Now a 5-year-old mare, Katy Smiles demonstrated a new dimension in two starts at this meeting, capturing the Hoist Her Flag Stakes and a subsequent allowance contest with impressiveoff-the-pace moves. Katy Smiles's ability to either set or stalk the pace gives jockey Juan Rivera valuable options in the six-furlong Kutz Stakes.

Trainer Steve Asmussen has entered Gleaming Elegance in the Dean Kutz and has named Dean Butler to ride. A front-running allowance winner at Oaklawn in March, Gleaming Elegance has raced once since that effort, having finished fourth behind Miss Macy Sue in the Saylorville at Prairie Meadows.

G G's Dolly, Fancy Gold, Salty Attraction, and the probable pacesetter Shimmering Sunset are also entered in the Kutz, which is carded as the sixth race on the Canterbury Park card.
