Canterbury Park offers 10 percent takeout pick five

Matt Hegarty|Jun 08, 2020

Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minn., will offer a pick five with a 10 percent takeout rate when its meet opens Wednesday, the track announced last week.

The 10 percent takeout rate will be the lowest-raked pick five in the country. The minimum wager will be 50 cents. Of late, several tracks have announced low-takeout pick five bets in an effort to draw attention to their cards.

The first 12 percent takeout pick five was implemented several years ago by The Stronach Group, linking races from different tracks. This year, as tracks have attempted to gain market share in an industry disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic but bolstered by the wide availability of account wagering across the United States, Charles Town racetrack in West Virginia added a 12 percent pick five to its menu, which was then followed up by the implementation of an 11.99 percent takeout pick five at Indiana Grand.

Canterbury Park will reopen Wednesday with a 4:30 p.m. post. The card of nine races drew 86 entries on Friday.

Canterbury plans to run on a Tuesday-through-Thursday schedule for the next two weeks, before moving to a Monday-through-Thursday schedule on June 29. First post every day will be 4:30 p.m.
