Cannon to have surgery following Monday spill

Jockey Declan Cannon was scheduled to undergo surgery Wednesday morning at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis after suffering three fractured vertebrae Monday in a spill at Indiana Grand.
Cannon’s agent, Tim Hanisch, said doctors expect the jockey to make a full recovery and that he could be back riding in six months or so.
Cannon, 34, was injured when his mount, Zoikes, clipped heels amid heavy traffic and fell, throwing him hard to the turf. Zoikes escaped with minor injuries, and no other jockeys or horses were seriously injured. There were no disqualifications following a stewards’ inquiry.
A GoFundMe account to offset medical expenses has been set up for Cannon, an Irish native who lives in Louisville and is based year-round in Kentucky. Cannon, a married father of a young son, has 300 wins in a career dating to May 2015.
