ARCADIA, Calif. – Given the uncertain racing conditions from rain this week, it is fitting one of the top horses running Friday at Santa Anita is a comeback mare whose future was as unsure as the weather, until recently. Feeling Grazeful returns in a sprint for Cal-bred fillies and mares that is her first start in nearly a year and her first start since owner Susan Osborne passed away last August at age 81. Candice Osborne contemplated selling her mother’s racing stable, Tarabilla Farms, but reconsidered. “This was her passion, this was her love,” Candice Osborne said this week. “She loved the horses. Up until about a week ago, I wasn’t sure if we were going to continue [the stable] or not. I feel like I needed to give it a shot for Mom. She loved it so much.” Feeling Grazeful was the final winner for Susan Osborne’s Tarabilla Farms; the mare might be the first winner for owner Candice Osborne. Trained by Anthony Saavedra, Feeling Grazeful returns with solid works, speed figures that exceed par, an outside post, and meet-leading jockey Juan Hernandez. Feeling Grazeful runs in race 6; the split of the Cal-bred sprint is race 8. Sole ownership is a new role for Candice Osborne, but she has attended races for more than 40 years and often accompanied her mother for Tarabilla Farms stakes wins such as the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint and Santa Anita Handicap. :: Get ready for Santa Anita racing with DRF Past Performances, Picks, and Clocker Reports.  “I saw Desert Code run, Melatonin, it was always exciting when they got that far,” Osborne said, adding that her mother was thrilled with last year’s purchase of Feeling Grazeful. “She really, really loved this horse.” A 5-year-old gray mare by Grazen, Feeling Grazeful began her racing career for breeders Jay and Julie Manoogian, and trainer Bill Spawr. She was sold to Susan Osborne’s Tarabilla Farms prior to her maiden win, then transferred to the owner’s main trainer, David Hofmans. Feeling Grazeful won an allowance turf route for Hofmans in February; Friday is her first start since. Saavedra, Feeling Grazeful’s new trainer believes the mare is ready to fire first start back. “She should be tight enough, she just does everything so easy,” Saavedra said. “She did the 59-and-changes on the training track, and wouldn’t blow out a match afterward.” Feeling Grazeful has won two of six, with three runner-up finishes. :: Get Santa Anita Clocker Reports straight from the morning workouts at the track. Available every race day.  Saavedra gallops his own horses, and currently trains nine. In addition to Feeling Grazeful, former Tarabilla runners owned by Candice Osborne and trained by Saavedra include recent comeback runner-up Miss Fia and older maiden Belmont Bill. Rivals for Feeling Grazeful include Queen Molotov, Big Shamrock, Vegan, Shanghai Sunrise, and Rose Harbor. In race 8 Saavedra starts longshot Roman Empress. The top contenders are Starship Defiant, Irish Wahine, and Vella. ◗ A second-level allowance turf sprint for fillies and mares is scheduled to be run on the hillside course as race 7. Likely pacesetter Phenom could be long gone if she can hold off the rally of deep closer Stella Noir. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
