Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society horses of racing age sale rebounds from last year

Randy Goulding|Mar 18, 2019

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - The Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society horses of racing age sale at Hastings Saturday was a huge success compared to last year’s sale. Twenty-seven of the thirty-one horses cataloged were sold for a total of $251,400. Last year there were more buybacks than horses sold, with just five horses changing hands for a total of $35,500.

Terry Jordan bought sale-topper Refried Dreams for $24,000. Consigned by Red Rock Farms, the 2-year-old B.C.-bred gelding is by Bakken out of Remarkable Lady. Refried Dreams is the first foal from Remarkable Lady, who is a sister to five stakes winners, the most notable being Grade 3 winner Trick of the North.

Twenty-one of the horses sold were consigned by The Hole in the Wall Gang. The CTHS, the local Horsemen’s Benefit and Protective Association, and the British Columbia Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association joined together to form the Hole in the Wall Gang. They used funds provided by the British Columbia Horse Racing Management Committee to purchase the horses, all 2-year-olds, for the sale.

“It was by far the best horses of racing age sale we’ve had so far,” said Glen Todd, who is the Thoroughbred representative on the B.C. Horse Racing Management Committee. “It brought some new owners into the game as well as some older ones returning. All and all a huge success.”

“Our members really stepped up, and with the three groups working together it was a big success,” said CTHS president Grant Watson. “We are all aware of the shortage of horses, and as a result of the sale we will have horses competing that may not have been running at Hastings this year.”

The 2019 Hastings meet was originally scheduled to start on April 28, but due to unseasonably cold weather causing the track to be frozen for most of February, opening day was moved to Saturday, May 4.

“The weather couldn’t have been better Saturday,” said Todd. “Everyone was upbeat so hopefully it bodes well for the meet.”
