ETOBICOKE, Ontario — Glenn Sikura, Irwin Driedger, Pink Lloyd, and Formal Gold are among the 2023 nominees for induction into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame. A 20-person election committee for each breed, Thoroughbred and Standardbred, will determine the one individual to be inducted in each of four categories for that breed, with the results to be announced on April 26. The classes of 2022 and 2023 will be formally inducted on Aug. 9. The Thoroughbred builder ballot is comprised of Glenn Sikura, Glen Todd, and Sam Lima. Sikura, the co-owner and operator of Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm Canada, was a past president of the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society. He has served as the chief steward of the Jockey Club of Canada since 2018. The late Glen Todd was a prominent owner in British Columbia for decades and a co-winner of the 2011 Sovereign Award for outstanding owner in 2011. The late Sam Lima was a long-time owner in Ontario who founded the Toronto Thoroughbred Racing Club. :: Bet the races on DRF Bets! Driedger was among the leading riders in Ontario in the 1980s and was voted the Sovereign Award for outstanding jockey in 1981. Ramsammy, a two-time Sovereign Award winner, was a top rider at Woodbine in the 1990s and was victorious in the Queen’s Plate twice. Stahlbaum won the 1980 Sovereign Award and rode numerous top horses, most notably Afleet and Bessarabian. The Thoroughbred male horse ballot is made up of Fatal Bullet, Joshua Tree, and Pink Lloyd. Fatal Bullet was crowned Canada’s Horse of the Year in 2008 after ending up second to Midnight Lute in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Santa Anita. Irish-bred Joshua Tree captured the Grade 1 Canadian International in 2010, 2011, and 2013. Pink Lloyd was a five-time champion sprinter and the 2017 Canadian Horse of the Year. In the Thoroughbred veteran category, voters will select among Formal Gold, Bessarabian, and trainer Andy Smithers. Formal Gold, a multiple Grade 1 winner in the United States in the 1990s, is the fastest Canadian-bred ever in terms of Beyer Speed Figures, earning a 126. Grade 1 winner Bessarabian was Canadian’s champion older female in 1986. Andy Smithers was a top trainer in Ontario in the 1960s. The nominees on the Standardbred side are Dr. Moira Gunn, Al Libfeld, Dr. Lloyd McKibbin, Chris Christoforou Jr., Claire MacDonald, Ed Tracey, along with horses Emilie Cas El, Pure Ivory, West of L A, Bulldog Hanover, Marion Marauder, and Muscle Mass. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
