Canadian Derby once again meet highlight
There are no notable changes from 2014 to the 37-race stakes schedule, worth just over $2 million, at Northlands Park this year.
The Grade 3, $200,000 Canadian Derby is the marquee race at the meet, which begins May 1 and concludes Oct. 24. The 1 3/8-mile Canadian Derby, set for Aug. 15, is the only graded race at Northlands.
Supporting the Canadian Derby are the $50,000 Sonoma for 3-year-old fillies and two $50,000 stakes for 3-year-olds and up: the 1 1/16-mile Westerner and the 6 1/2-furlong Sun Sprint.
The 1 1/16-mile Breeders’ Handicap for 3-year-olds and up headlines seven $50,000 stakes races restricted to horses bred in Alberta on Fall Classic Day, Sept. 19.
The richest race of the meet for fillies and mares, the $75,000 Edmonton Distaff, will be held at night on Friday, Aug. 14. The $75,000 Speed to Spare will be contested over 1 3/8 miles on Sept. 7. The Speed to Spare is the richest race for 3-year-olds and up at Northlands.
Closing weekend features the one-mile Freedom of the City for 2-year-old fillies on Oct. 23 and the one-mile Canadian Juvenile for 2-year-olds on Oct. 24. Both races are worth $50,000.
