Campanelle ships to France to run in Group 1 Maurice de Gheest
The 3-year-old filly Campanelle, accompanied by the 2-year-old Twilight Gleaming, has shipped to France and starts Sunday at Deauville in the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest.
Campanelle most recently started in the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup over six furlongs at Royal Ascot, where she was elevated from second to first via the disqualification of the Dragon Symbol. Trainer Wesley Ward said Frankie Dettori has the mount on Campanelle in the Maurice de Gheest, a 6 1/2-furlong straight-course sprint. The 2-year-old filly Twilight Gleaming, second in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot, flew with Campanelle from Chicago to Paris and runs this week in a listed stakes over five furlongs at Deauville.
Before shipping, both horses worked July 31 on the Arlington grass course, Twilight Gleaming going a half-mile in 53.40 seconds, Campanelle five furlongs in 1:03.40.

Also working Saturday at Arlington was Golden Pal, a horse that Ward this summer has called potentially the best he’s ever trained. Golden Pal, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint last fall and most recently victorious in Saratoga’s Quick Call Stakes, his 2021 debut, went a half-mile in 51.80 seconds and ships Aug. 13 to England, where he runs in the five-furlong Nunthorpe Stakes on Aug. 17 at York.
