Calumet widow vows to carry on

Glenye Cain Oakford|Mar 28, 2003

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Barbara de Kwiatkowski, widow of Calumet Farm owner Henryk de Kwiatkowski, said this week that Calumet will remain a horse farm "as long as I can help it."

The Lexington Herald-Leader reported de Kwiatkowski's statement Friday. Henryk de Kwiatkowski died March 17 of pneumonia.

Barbara de Kwiatkowski, the second wife of the Polish-born airline magnate, told the paper that "Calumet is going to stay there as long as I can help it, because Calumet works. It just depends really on my stepchildren."

De Kwiatkowski had six children - four daughters and two sons - with his first wife, Lynne Sawdon. He had one son with Barbara de Kwiatkowski. The elder children play a crucial role in Calumet under the trust their father established after purchasing the farm for $17 million at a 1992 bankruptcy auction.
