California Thoroughbred Breeders Association to hold mixed sale
The California Thoroughbred Breeders Association will conduct a January mixed sale for the third consecutive year on Wednesday at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds in Pomona, Calif.
The one-day sale consists of 155 horses, ranging from early 2-year-olds and yearlings to broodmares and horses of racing age. The sale will be held at the Hinds Pavilion, the former home of the Barretts Sale Co., and will begin at noon.
This is the first equine auction in Los Angeles County since the corresponding sale last year. Fasig-Tipton did not conduct a 2020 2-year-olds in training sale after hosting such an event at Santa Anita in June 2019. Fasig-Tipton’s California yearling sale was held at Los Alamitos Racecourse in Orange County in October because of coronavirus restrictions.
Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the CTBA is offering online bidding through its website for Wednesday’s sale.
Wednesday’s catalog is smaller than the 2020 sale when 269 horses were offered with 121 sold for a gross of $885,400. The average price was $7,317, compared to an average price of $7,275 in 2019.
The median price at the 2020 sale was $3,200. There were 87 horses listed as not sold, or 41.8 percent of the hips that went through the ring.
The most expensive hip was a 2-year-old filly by Declaration of War who was sold for $60,000. She has yet to race, but was working at Golden Gate Fields as recently as November.
The most expensive colt, by Runhappy, was purchased for $52,000 and is unraced, but has worked at Santa Anita in recent weeks.
