California phone handle: 1%

Telephone betting handle during its second week in California was approximately 1 percent of the statewide handle, the California Horse Racing Board said Wednesday.

Average handle was $138,849 during the six-day period from Jan. 30 to Feb. 4. The highest one-day handle was $207,564, on Saturday, Feb. 2.

Mike Marten, a CHRB spokesman, said the average handle was less than 1 percent of all betting in California on each day, including harness, Quarter Horse, and Thoroughbred wagers. The data included wagering through the two systems licensed on Jan. 24 to take account bets in California, Television Games Network and XPressBet, owned by Magna Entertainment

Marten said that regulators had not yet been able to extract data from the first five days of account wagering in the state, nor had they been able to determine which system took which bets.
