California Horse Racing Board mandates works at all distances be published
Workouts at any distance, including one or two furlongs, must be included in workout reports published by California racetracks effective immediately, according to a directive issued Friday by California Horse Racing Board executive director Scott Chaney.
Most one- or two-furlong workouts are recorded by juveniles, while horses 3 years old and up rarely have works of less than three furlongs on the work tab.

Chaney said rules recently enacted by the federal Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority were a factor in the directive.
Trainers will be required to follow existing rules regarding workouts that include examinations by an attending veterinarian within 72 hours of the workout “to promote transparency for the wagering public, to comply with the requirement of HISA, and to make it clear that all of the regulations related to workouts apply to any exercise session near full speed or close to full speed regardless of distance,” Chaney wrote.
