Three-year-olds will be in the national spotlight next weekend, but this weekend they will get opportunities to shine during Golden Gate Fields’s Gold Rush Weekend. The $100,000 California Derby will be run at 1 1/16 miles as a supporting feature to the Grade 3 San Francisco Mile on Saturday’s 12-race card, which concludes with six stakes races. Fillies will run in the $75,000 California Oaks also at 1 1/16 miles. On Sunday, Cal-bred 3-year-olds will run in a pair of $75,000 stakes at one mile on the turf, the Campanile and the Silky Sullivan. Several of Saturday’s entrants will be cross-entered in Sunday’s races as trainers try to find the right spot for improving young runners that are ready to step up in competition. :: Bet horse racing on DRF Bets. Eleven fillies were entered in the Oaks, which will be run as the 10th race. The derby seems an open event with only Parnelli and Tesoro even nominated for the Kentucky Derby. Jimmy Irish makes only his second start after breezing to victory in his sprint debut. Parnelli and Govenor’s Party are the only stakes-placed members of the field. Parnelli, who has been beaten by double digits in all three stakes starts, was third in the Grade 3 Sham behind Life Is Good and Medina Spirit. Govenor’s Party was third at 119-1 in the El Camino Real Derby, and a repeat of that race would be good enough to win here. Parnelli may have the advantage in the field despite the double-digit stakes losses. The two most recent races were a fifth to Medina Spirit in the Grade 3 Robert Lewis and a sixth to Rock Your World in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby. Trainer John Shirreffs has dialed back on the competition here for Parnelli. Despite the margins of defeat, Parnelli has been able to be forwardly placed early in his starts, sitting second behind Rock Your World in the Santa Anita Derby. Jimmy Irish is the “X” factor after dueling for the early lead and then pulling clear through the lane on April 4. It was a nice effort, but it was only in a maiden sprint. He should be a pace factor, and trainer Jonathan Wong is confident he can handle the distance. “We think a lot of him,” said Wong, Golden Gate’s leading trainer. Wong also sends out Stalking Shadow, who has won three of his last four starts. His last five starts have come at a mile. Stalking Shadow was favored over the victorious Govenor’s Party in a starter allowance at Golden Gate in January, and finished fourth, beaten three-quarters of a length. He’s won both his starts since. Lost In Space made his first six starts in England, and ran third of four March 28 in a mile allowance race on turf at Santa Anita in his only U.S. start. Trainer O.J. Jauregui saw Tesoro win his career debut at a mile and then get disqualified. He entered him at the last minute in the El Camino Real Derby, but the Anchor Down colt got away poorly and was never in the race. He came back in March to score a solid maiden win. “We want to give him another shot,” said Jauregui. “He’s been working good and done everything we want of him.” Quinn Howey is doing the same with Omph, who has been a runner-up in all three of his starts against winners but is getting a big boost in competition here. Howey cites the gelding’s steady improvement as a reason to give him a shot. Twilight Rider, trained by Blaine Wright, is 2 for 2 here but is making his first start in five months in what could serve as a prep for next month’s Alcatraz. California Oaks The speedy Risen Lady drew the rail in the Oaks. She has won two straight, a starter allowance on the Tapeta and an allowance on the turf. Trained by Mike McCarthy, she beat Saturday rival Joymaker by a neck at this 1 1/16-mile distance in the Tapeta race, and then held off favored Freedom Flyer by a nose on the turf, while leading every step of the way in both starts. She’ll be facing those two rivals again as well as Liam’s Secret, who was third in the turf race. Howey says Joymaker has been “steadily improving.” McCarthy also sends up A Real Hero, fourth in the Arizona Oaks after graduating at this distance here. Patrick Gallagher sends up Styledome, an Irish import who ran fourth and last against males in a one-mile turf allowance March 28 at Santa Anita in her only U.S. start. She finished 1 3/4 lengths behind third-place finisher Lost In Space, who runs in the California Derby. Styledome will be ridden by former local star Ricardo Gonzalez. Jauregui could have a surprise package with Ida Claire, a runner-up to fellow entrant Miss Peaky Blinder on Tapeta in her debut before graduating at odds-on on turf. “She’s training good, and, like with Tesoro, right now she can run against 3-year-olds, and she’s in her own backyard,” Jauregui said. “Before long, there will only be races for 3 and up.”
