California Chrome works quick seven furlongs for Dubai handicap
California Chrome, the 2014 Horse of the Year, recorded his third workout in less than two weeks at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai on Friday, working seven furlongs in 1:24.40. The workout ahead of a $150,000 handicap on Feb. 25 has left trainer Art Sherman somewhat surprised by the 5-year-old’s energy.
“I didn’t realize he’d train like he is over there,” Sherman said. “He’s changed into a big, strong horse that wants to beat you. Now, we need some racing luck.”
California Chrome is scheduled to have two starts in Dubai – the Feb. 25 race at 1 1/4 miles on dirt and the $10 million Dubai World Cup on March 26. California Chrome was second to Prince Bishop in the 2015 Dubai World Cup.
Art Sherman’s son, Alan, traveled to Dubai in late January and has overseen California Chrome’s training.
Alan Sherman said on Facebook that California Chrome worked a half-mile in 48 seconds on Jan. 31 and six furlongs in 1:12.40 on Feb. 5. Dihigi Gladney, a former jockey in California, traveled to Dubai and has ridden California Chrome in his workouts and gallops.
Art Sherman spoke with his son after Friday’s workout, when it was still Thursday evening in California.
“He said, ‘Dad, the horse worked fantastic,’ ” Sherman said. “He said he’ll get one more five-eighths in him, a maintenance work, and he’ll be ready.”
California Chrome won the Grade 2 San Pasqual Stakes at Santa Anita on Jan. 9 in his only start since the 2015 Dubai World Cup. Owned by Perry Martin and Taylor Made Farms, California Chrome has won 10 of 19 starts and earned $6,442,650.
