California Chrome might breeze this weekend

California Chrome is nearing the first workout of his comeback.
Trainer Art Sherman said on Wednesday that California Chrome might breeze a quarter-mile on Saturday at Los Alamitos, where the 2014 Horse of the Year has been training for nearly a month. California Chrome returned to Sherman’s stable in early October after a three-month rest at a Kentucky farm.
“He’s doing good, and he’s training on the bit,” Sherman said. “We’ll probably go a quarter in 25 [seconds]. He’s training pretty aggressively. He’s getting with the program.”
California Chrome has not raced since finishing second in the $10 million Dubai World Cup in the United Arab Emirates last March. The same race is a goal for March 2016.
Following the Dubai trip this year, California Chrome was trained in England from April to mid-June with the intent of a start at the prestigious Royal Ascot meeting in June. Those plans were dashed when he was found to have an abscess in a foot. A month later, while training at Arlington Park for the Arlington Million in August, California Chrome was found to have bruising on a cannon bone.
California Chrome spent the late summer at Taylor Made Farm in Kentucky. Taylor Made purchased breeder and co-owner Steve Coburn’s share in California Chrome during the summer. Perry Martin, who bred and co-owned California Chrome with Coburn, remains the majority owner.
Sherman has mentioned the San Pasqual Handicap at Santa Anita on Jan. 9 as a potential comeback race for California Chrome.
