California Chrome coming home

CYPRESS, Calif. – California Chrome will return to the United States from England on Tuesday, with the goal of a start in the Arlington Million on Aug. 15 still in place, trainer Art Sherman said on Wednesday.
California Chrome has been based in England at trainer Rae Guest’s stable in Newmarket since early April, shortly after finishing second in the $10 million Dubai World Cup at Meydan Racecourse on March 28. California Chrome was intended to start in the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot in England on June 17, but the plan was abandoned because of an apparent bruised foot.
Sherman said on Wednesday he is eager for California Chrome to return to the United States. The 2014 Horse of the Year, California Chrome will be flown to Chicago, where he was to undergo quarantine before being based at Arlington Park.
“I’ve got to have my blacksmith look at [the foot] when I get him home,” Sherman said. “I wish I could see him. It’s not like you can be there and pinpoint everything. I’ve got to go with what other people say.”
Owned by Perry Martin and Steve Coburn, California Chrome has won 9 of 18 starts and earned $6,322,650.
