Calhoun pair sweeps Saturday juvenile stakes
Bret Calhoun padded his stats as North America’s leading 2-year-old trainer by wins Saturday night when he swept the El Joven and La Senorita stakes at Retama Park near San Antonio. Cash Bonus was a head winner over stablemate and favorite Better Than Magic in the El Joven, while More Than Most backed up a maiden special weight win at Churchill Downs with a clear victory in the La Senorita.
The El Joven and La Senorita were for 2-year-olds at a mile on turf, and each race was worth $75,000.
Cash Bonus ($10) pressed the pacesetter Tiz Cherry Wine through six furlongs in 1:14.09 in the El Joven, moved to the fore, and held off Better Than Magic. There was an inquiry into the stretch run as the stewards looked at contact between the first two finishers, but the result stood. Cash Bonus covered the distance on firm ground in 1:38.30.
Chris Rosier rode the winner for Carl Moore Management.
More Than Most ($4.20) pushed Indygo Rocket through six furlongs in 1:13.52 in the La Senorita, which was restricted to fillies, then shuttled clear for a 4 1/2-length win over Angelita. More Than Most covered the distance in 1:37.54.
Cliff Berry was aboard the winner for Doug Scharbauer.
