Calhoun attacking TTA Sales Futurity

Trainer Bret Calhoun could have four starters in each division of the Texas Thoroughbred Association Sales Futurity at Lone Star Park on July 12. The series is for 2-year-olds at five furlongs, and each side of the race has an estimated purse of $100,000.
Supermason established himself as the probable favorite for the colts and geldings division when he cruised to a 4 1/2-length maiden special weight win at Lone Star on June 26. For the effort, he earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 76. The win came in Supermason’s second start, one race after he broke slowly and ran second to Silverhill, who went on to run second in last weekend’s Grade 3 Bashford Manor at Churchill Downs.
“He really ran up to expectations second time out,” Calhoun said of Supermason. “We’ve been pretty high on him all along.”
Supermason is by Grasshopper and races for Brad Grady.
Calhoun said W V Jetsetter, who also earned a Beyer of 76 for a maiden special weight win last month at Lone Star, is another candidate for the Sales Futurity. He races for Wes Melcher. Gold Flight and Alamo City, both maiden winners for the Estate of Clarence Scharbauer, round out Calhoun’s runners pointing for the colts and geldings division.
Vivian Da Bling, a Calhoun trainee who popped a Beyer of 85 when she won her debut by 9 1/2 lengths at Lone Star on June 15, is the probable favorite for the fillies division. The Louisiana-bred races for JRita Young Thoroughbreds. Calhoun said Santacafe and Silver City Sal, who race for the Estate of Clarence Scharbauer, and Red Phone, owned by Wayne Sanders and Larry Hirsch, are also targeting the Sales Futurity.
Calhoun’s crop of 2-year-olds includes Promise Me Silver, who parlayed a maiden win at Lone Star into victory in the $100,000 Debutante at Churchill for owner Robert Luttrell. Calhoun said she could see stakes action next at Saratoga or Prairie Meadows. He said the same is true of Silverhill, a Lone Star debut winner for the Estate of Clarence Scharbauer.
