OPELOUSAS, La. – Under confident handling by leading rider Colby Hernandez, Cale’s Gold pounced on the leaders turning for home in Saturday night’s $100,000 D. S. “Shine” Young Futurity and kicked clear by seven expanding lengths. The longshot Wonder Run held on for second after helping set the early pace in the 5 1/2-furlong affair for Louisiana-bred 2-year-old colts and geldings. He was followed closely by Our Rapidish in third. Trained by the meeting’s runaway leading conditioner Karl Broberg, Cale’s Gold ($4.80) improved to two wins from as many starts following a maiden score here last month. The son of Gold Tribute topped the Equine Sales Company of Louisiana’s 2-year-olds in training sale held at nearby Copper Crown Training Center in late April, fetching $65,000. The bay colt is owned by Jerry Namy, and he covered the distance in a solid 1:04.19 over a fast strip. In the $100,000 filly division of the Shine, Cajun Conoseir also rallied from just off the pace before drawing clear by almost four lengths. Aunt Nellie crashed the exacta at more than 40-1 with a late run from well back followed by Halfandtwoquarters. The even-money favorite Elegant Idea was tracking the pace from along the inside when she bobbled late in the turn and unseated Diego Saenz. Preliminary reports from Evangeline officials indicated Saenz suffered a leg injury but was conscious and moving his extremities before being transported to a nearby hospital. Elegant Idea, who bolted to the outside and leapt the outer rail, was captured without further incident and did not appear to have suffered any serious injury. Cajun Conoseir ($6.40) is a daughter of Closing Argument and is trained by Steve Flint. She was guided to victory by the veteran Gerard Melancon and also has won both of her career starts for owner Whispering Oaks Farm LLC. The final time was 1:05.52.
