Caledonia Road done for season, will be sold

David Grening|Jul 02, 2018
Caledonia Road wins the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies
Emily Shields Caledonia Road on Sunday will make her first start since winning the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies in November.

Caledonia Road, the champion 2-year-old filly of 2017, will not race again this year and will be offered at public auction later in 2018, her connections announced Monday night.

According to a press release issued by Nick Sallusto of Sallusto and Albina Bloodstock, who manages Caledonia Road for part-owners Newtownanner Stud, Caledonia Road will be turned out after developing bone bruising. Caledonia Road finished fifth of six in the Grade 1 Acorn at Belmont Park on June 9.
Newtownanner Stud owns Caledonia Road in partnership with Zoom and Fish Stable Inc. and Charlie Spring. She is trained by Ralph Nicks.

Caledonia Road, a daughter of Quality Road, won her debut at Saratoga last Sept. 3 and then finished second in the Grade 1 Frizette at Belmont Park. In her first – and only – start around two turns, Caledonia Road won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies by 3 1/2 lengths at Del Mar.

She had a chip removed from an ankle shortly after her Breeders’ Cup victory. In late winter, her training was interrupted by a virus.

She made a successful 3-year-old debut winning an allowance race at Belmont in April. In the Acorn, she was never involved and finished fifth, 19 1/2 lengths behind Monomoy Girl.

“It will be tough to let her go,” Luc Paiement, managing partner for Zoom and Fish Stable, said in the release. “She was a brilliant 2-year-old with a pedigree to be a much better older filly. She has the all the makings of a top broodmare.”
