Caldwell runners look tough in both divisions of D.S. “Shine” Young Futurity
I Want a Picture is the only horse to have defeated the Saratoga-bound Galactica, and he will make his first start since pulling the upset in Saturday night’s $75,000 colts-and-geldings division of the D.S. “Shine” Young Futurity at Evangeline Downs.
The race will share a card with the $75,000 fillies division of the D.S. “Shine” Young. Both stakes will be run over 5 1/2 furlongs and are restricted to 2-year-olds bred in Louisiana.
Galactica was favored in his June 9 debut at Lone Star Park, where he finished second to I Want a Picture. Galactica returned to win a five-furlong maiden special weight race in a blazing 57.78 seconds and a $100,000 division of the Texas Thoroughbred Futurity. He is now scheduled to ship to Saratoga and could start next in one of two stakes there, according to trainer Bret Calhoun.
I Want a Picture has not started since winning his maiden by 1 1/2 lengths over Galactica. The effort came in I Want a Picture’s second career start. In his debut May 20, he broke slowly and finished second in a maiden special weight at Lone Star.
“The colt’s just naturally getting better and better,” said J.R. Caldwell, who trains I Want a Picture for Flurry Racing Stables. “In the first race, he got back too far and couldn’t run them down. He came back in his next race, sat closer, and finished strong.”
Danny Sorenson has the mount from post 9 in the field of 10.
“You can do anything you want with the horse,” Caldwell said. “You’ve got some options.”
Others set to start include Calimor, who is a half-brother to the multiple stakes winners Fuse It ($509.475) and Smitty’s Sunshine ($532,219). Diego Saenz has the mount from post 2.
Caldwell also has a top contender in the fillies division in She’screative. She was an 8 1/2-length debut winner June 28 at Evangeline.
“We knew she could run,” Caldwell said. “We didn’t know how she’d handle everything. She handled it like a seasoned pro.”
She’screative is by Creative Cause and is a half-sister to Mo’ Green, a Grade 3 winner and earner of $277,420.
“She’s growing up a lot and has filled out,” Caldwell said.
Dusty Shepherd has the mount for owner Thomas L. Holyfield and will break from post 4 in the field of 12.
Others set to start include Bionic Butterfly, a half-sister to Four Leaf Chief and Sashimi Blaster, both stakes winners at 2.
