Calder: Angelica Zapata rolls home in Nancy’s Glitter

MIAMI - What looked like a two-horse race on paper turned into a one-horse race on the track after Angelica Zapata powered away to an easy nine-length victory over Canadian Mistress in Saturday’s $75,000 Nancy’s Glitter Handicap at Calder. The two fillies went off co-favored at even money.

Canadian Mistress broke a step slowly and took a little time before taking her customary position on the lead entering the clubhouse turn of the 1 1/16-mile Nancy’s Glitter. But jockey Jose Ferrer never let his main rival relax, dogging her from outside every step of the way aboard Angelica Zapata.

Ferrer sent Angelica Zapata up to challenge for command leaving the backstretch, shortly after which the pair readily drew clear upon settling into the stretch. Canadian Mistress weakened steadily through the final furlong but was still good enough to hang on for second money, finishing 1 1/4 lengths clear of Annie Roe.

The victory was the third in succession for Angelica Zapata, a 4-year-old daughter of Sharp Humor trained by Ronald Pellegrini for owner Herman Van Den Broeck. She covered the distance in 1:45.44 over a fast track and returned $4.20.
