Calder: Angelica Zapata, R Free Roll win stakes

Ira Kaplan|Nov 02, 2013

Angelica Zapata stretched her winning streak to three in a row - all stakes - by winning the $50,000 Capano Handicap at Calder on Saturday.

In the day's other stakes there, R Free Roll came through as the favorite in the $50,000 Bold World Handicap.

Both races were for fillies and mares.

Angelica Zapata, under Juan Leyva, held off Sure Route by a length in the Capano, a 1 1/16-mile turf race. The pacesetter Miss Montreal finished third, a length back of Sure Route.

Owned by Herman Van Den Broeck and trained by Ronald Pellegrini, Angelica Zapata covered the distance in 1:40.29 on a firm course and paid $5.80 as the favorite.

Angelica Zapata was coming off victories in the Wasted Tears on the Gulfstream turf and the Nancy's Glitter on the Calder main track.

In the Bold World, R Free Roll and Heart Stealer ran one-two all the way around the track, with R Free Roll and jockey Antonio Gallardo winning by a length. It was another seven lengths back to Centrique in third.

R Free Roll, owned by Averill Racing and Silver Oak Stable, covered the six furlongs in 1:10.36. Trained by Ralph Ziadie, she returned $5.20.
