MIAMI – Angelica Zapata and Canadian Mistress, who finished a neck apart in that order in the Emergency Nurse Stakes last month, will match strides again Saturday under similar conditions in Calder’s $75,000 Nancy’s Glitter Handicap at 1 1/16 miles.Angelica Zapata has never been better. The Emergency Nurse was the second consecutive stakes success for the 4-year-old Angelica Zapata, who paired up career-best 97 Beyer Speed Figures in her last two starts. She also won the Sara’s Success going a mile in the slop on May 19.Angelica Zapata, racing locally for the first time this summer, just missed becoming graded stakes placed last year at 3 when finishing fourth in the Eight Belles and the Dogwood at Churchill Downs. In the Emergency Nurse, Angelica Zapata raced near the rear of the pack for the opening half-mile, made a quick move around the second turn to join the leaders after six furlongs, and then outfinished Canadian Mistress under strong handling from her regular rider, Jose Ferrer.“She had a physical ailment here and there at the end of her 3-year-old season and we thought it would be to her benefit to take some time off,” said trainer Ron Pellegrini. “She could have won three or four more races last year with better luck. She had the saddle slip in a Grade 3 on one of those occasions and still finished fourth with the kid not being able to do anything but hang on.” Pellegrini said he has been delighted with the job Ferrer has done since being paired up with Angelica Zapata for the first time this season. “I couldn’t ask for any better rides than she’s gotten in all her races here, and I am really pleased with the way she’s been going thus far,” said Pellegrini. “Hopefully she’ll continue to run to her ability the remainder of the year.” And when asked if he thought he had Canadian Mistress to beat again in the Nancy’s Glitter, Pellegrini confidently replied, “I think she’s got me to beat.” Canadian Mistress, trained by Marty Wolfson, was game in defeat and likely deserved a better fate when narrowly defeated in the Emergency Nurse after forcing the pace from start to finish. Canadian Mistress remains winless on the year after six starts, although she did cross the finish line first in a high-level optional claiming race last winter at Gulfstream Park, only to be disqualified and placed third for impeding a rival on the turn.Wolfson has also entered the lightly raced Sister Pippa in the Nancy’s Glitter. Sister Pippa has won both her starts since joining Wolfson’s stable this spring, with both races switched from the turf to the main track. She is the only 3-year-old among the seven entered for the Nancy’s Glitter. Angelica Zapata picks up one pound and will carry high weight of 121 pounds, three more than Canadian Mistress. My Pal Chrissy has yet to regain the form that made her one of the leaders of the local filly and mare handicap division last summer when she captured a pair of stakes, including the Elmer Heubeck Distaff Handicap. My Pal Chrissy has failed to hit the board in five tries in 2012 and finished a distant fourth behind Angelica Zapata despite a ground-saving trip in the Emergency Nurse. Completing the field are Annie Roe, an easy starter allowance winner in her last start; the improving Mae Ruler; and Go Go Lolo, who has not raced since September.
