Cajun Gumbow upsets Janet Is Ready in D.S. “Shine” Young Memorial Futurity

Cajun Gumbow became a stakes winner Friday night, when she set the pace and prevailed by two and a half lengths over even-money favorite Janet Is Ready in the $60,000 fillies division of the D.S. “Shine” Young Memorial Futurity at Evangeline Downs. It was another two and a half lengths back in third to For Harper.
The race, which was run over five and a half furlongs, was restricted to 2-year-old fillies bred in Louisiana.

Cajun Gumbow ($9.80) set fractions of 22.13 seconds for the opening quarter and 46.46 for the half-mile. In the lane, she comfortably held off a bid from Janet Is Ready and went on to cover the distance on a muddy, sealed track in 1:05.48.
C.J. McMahon was aboard the winner for trainer Jayde Gelner.
Cajun Gumbow is a daughter of Oxbow owned by Thompson Racing. She is now 2 for 3 with earnings of $70,680. She came into the Shine Young off a third-place finish in the fillies division of the Texas Thoroughbred Association Futurity at Lone Star Park.
Gelner is now based at Remington Park.
Evangeline closes out its meet Saturday night with the colts and geldings division of the Shine Young. Races scheduled for turf Saturday will be run on the main track.
