Cajun Delta Dawn under consideration for Azalea
RACE REPLAY IS NOT AVAILABLE
Cajun Delta Dawn emerged as one of the top 2-year-old fillies of the spring-summer meet a year ago at Gulfstream Park, where she won the first four races of her career. She could see local action again soon.
Trainer David Fawkes said Friday that Cajun Delta Dawn is possible for the $75,000 Azalea on July 1.
Cajun Delta Dawn launched her 3-year-old season last week at Churchill Downs, and after pushing the pace from post 14 in the Grade 2 Eight Belles, she finished eighth. The start was her first in five months. Cajun Delta Dawn is now back home at Gulfstream.
“She got a lot out of it,” Fawkes said.
Cajun Delta Dawn began her career in a maiden special weight at Gulfstream last June. She then captured the track’s $75,000 Cassidy and the Desert Vixen and Susan’s Girl divisions of the Florida Sire Stakes before closing out her year in Louisiana with a runner-up finish in the Grade 3, $400,000 Delta Downs Princess on Nov. 19.
The Azalea is a seven-furlong race for 3-year-old fillies. Fawkes also has Florida Fabulous, who won her first two starts this year at Gulfstream before finishing 10th in the Eight Belles, under consideration for the Azalea.
Fawkes said Florida Fabulous did not care for the sloppy track in the Eight Belles. He said both fillies came out of the race in excellent condition, and like Cajun Delta Dawn, Florida Fabulous is back at Gulfstream.
“I’m going to try to separate them,” said Fawkes.
