ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Favored Caitlinhergrtness returned to winning in Saturday’s Grade 3 Ontario Matron with an authoritative score while giving jockey Flavien Prat a stakes double on the Woodbine Mile undercard. Caitlinhergrtness assumed a three-wide stalking position in 1 1/16-mile route for fillies and mares as Hurricane Clair set moderate fractions, with Fashionably Fab stalking in second. Caitlinhergrtness made her way to the front exiting the far turn and then opened up a clear lead before coasting home on top by 3 1/4 lengths, in a time of 1:42.92. Hurricane Clair held on for second at 23-1 and the 21-1 shot For Flying checked in third. Five Towns nosed out Fashionably Fab for fourth in the 11-horse field. Last year’s King’s Plate winner and Canadian champion 3-year-old filly, Caitlinhergrtness won her season opener in the Belle Mahone Stakes and subsequently ran second in another Tapeta route, the Grade 3 Trillium. In two stakes in her last three outings on the local main turf, she missed the board, ending up a distant fifth most recently in the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor. Trainer Kevin Attard said the daughter of Omaha Beach was getting back to her preferred type of course in the Matron. “I just think she needs two turns,” Attard said. “The way the (main) turf is configured, it’s not to her liking. When she did win on the turf, it was on the inner turf course. Now, she’s back doing what she likes.” Caitlinhergrtness ($3.70) earned $108,000 of the $176,100 purse for Winstar Farm. *** Simcoe ($4.60) stamped himself as the leading Tapeta sprinter at Woodbine with another front-running win in Saturday’s $173,100 Vigil Stakes. After getting away a bit slowly from the one hole, Rafael Hernandez gunned Simcoe to the lead and he set a fast pace after cutting loose from the pack. Several rivals made threatening moves early in the stretch, but Simcoe dug in and went on to prevail by 1 3/4 lengths, in a quick time of 1:21.19 for the seven furlongs. Horsepower finished another length back in second and Cruden Bay edged out Twin City for third in the seven-horse field. A son of the late Uncle Mo, Simcoe earned $108,000 in his second straight Grade 3 victory after taking the Bold Venture on Aug. 16 for Chiefswood Stables and trainer Katerina Vassilieva. “He’s trained really well since his last race,” Vassilieva said. “He was feeling full of himself, really confident. I was confident in him. We’ll see how he comes out of the race, but the next logical race to point to is the Kennedy Road Stakes.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
