HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – After knocking off the multiple Grade 2-placed Millefeuille with relative ease in her last start, Cafe Society figures as the one to beat when she takes the next step up the allowance ladder in Wednesday’s $62,000 main event at Gulfstream Park, carded at a mile over the main track for older fillies and mares. The eight race program also includes a $61,000 allowance dash scheduled to be run at five furlongs on the turf with the speedy Sayyaaf the favorite and one to catch. Post time for the first race is 1:05 p.m. Cafe Society, 4, showed promise right off the bat for trainer Shug McGaughey, launching her career during the fall of her 2-year-old campaign with a 3 1/2-length maiden win and a third-place finish in the Grade 3 Tempted at Aqueduct. But after finishing fourth in the Grade 2 Demoiselle at Aqueduct, 6 1/4 lengths behind winner Malathaat and 5 1/2 lengths behind runner-up Millefeuille, Cafe Society went to the sidelines for nearly a year. She did not return until last November, finishing a well-beaten fifth following a rough start under allowance conditions at Aqueduct. :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports Cafe Society was able to redeem herself in her next start, while also turning the tables in her second meeting with Millefeuille. She rallied from last down the backstretch to a convincing 3 1/4-length triumph over Millefeuille, the 3-5 favorite, going seven furlongs under entry-level allowance conditions here. Racing on Lasix for the first time, Cafe Society completed a mile under Junior Alvarado in 1:37.02, which earned her a career-best 84 Beyer Speed Figure. Cafe Society broke from the rail in that race and will also begin from the rail on Wednesday. Alvarado has been named aboard the well-bred Empire Maker filly once again, but is not expected to be able to keep the assignment after suffering a sprained ankle in a mishap that occurred during the running of Saturday’s Fountain of Youth. Cafe Society is far and away the least-experienced member of the field, which includes seven time winner Crumb Bun, who drops back to a more suitable spot after finishing a tiring sixth in the Grade 2 Inside Information here on Jan. 29. Crumb Bun had won a race similar to Wednesday’s 16 days earlier, rallying from just off the pace to a three-quarter-length decision over Happy Constitution. Allworthy also merits plenty of respect returning to the allowance ranks after a steady diet of stakes opportunities that included a third-place finish in the Grade 3 Charles Town Oaks last summer. Allworthy has been a beaten favorite in her last two starts, finishing second in the Wayward Lass at Tampa Bay Downs and third here in the Rampart. Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. said she will race without blinkers for the first time on Wednesday. Family Time defeated lesser allowance competition going a mile here Jan. 7, then ran ninth of 10 in the Inside Information. She exits a razor-sharp half-mile breeze on Feb. 23 and faces the prospect of getting a stiff challenge for the early lead from Music City Star.
