Cadeyrn will point to Wood Memorial
OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Cadeyrn, an 11-length maiden winner over the inner track Saturday, will be pointed to the Grade 1, $1 million Wood Memorial over Aqueduct’s main track April 9, trainer Jeremiah Englehart said Monday.
After a second and two thirds to begin his career, Cadeyrn, equipped with blinkers for the first time, galloped to a front-running score in a one-mile maiden heat Saturday. He ran the mile in 1:38.47 and earned an 80 Beyer Speed Figure.
“He ran how I thought he would,” Englehart said. “I liked him the first two times I ran him, and I thought he had a little excuse last time. I think the blinkers helped, and I thought Manny [Franco] did a really nice job getting him against the bridle.”
Englehart said he put blinkers on Cadeyrn because he thought in some of his races “he was out there playing around.”
Englehart said the Gotham on March 5 comes back too soon, and since allowance races are tough to find, he plans to take a swing in the Wood Memorial. Owner Tom O’Grady is based in Louisville, Ky., and naturally would like the chance to run a horse in the Kentucky Derby.
“If he doesn’t run well in the Wood, then we’ll go back to the drawing board,” Englehart said. “All along, I thought he was going to be a really nice colt.”
