Caddo River continues success for female line

Caddo River threw his name into the ring for Kentucky Derby consideration with a 10 1/4-length score in Friday’s Smarty Jones Stakes, the first race in Oaklawn Park’s series of Kentucky Derby prep races. In the process, the Shortleaf Stable homebred continued nearly a century of success for his tail-female line.
Caddo River’s dam, Pangburn, by Congrats, became the ninth consecutive member of her direct female line to produce at least one stakes winner. The young broodmare is one of three stakes winners produced by her dam, the Yes It’s True mare It’s True Love.
It’s True Love’s foals were led by Eres Tu, winner of Grade 3 Allaire duPont. It’s True Love, in turn, is one of two stakes winners out of her dam, Lovin Spoonful. The female line continues through stakes producers O My Darling, Midnight Pumpkin, Me Next, Iltis, We Hail, and finally, Clonaslee, foaled in 1922.
Among the most well-known horses produced by this female line is 1985 Preakness Stakes winner Tank’s Prospect, out of Midnight Pumpkin. Iltis was the dam of champion My Dear Girl, who in turn produced the influential sire In Reality.
Pangburn is relatively early in her broodmare career, and could continue to add to her success. The winner of the 2016 Maryland Racing Media Stakes, she placed in five other stakes races, including three graded stakes. Shortleaf purchased her as a yearling. Her first two foals, Babybel and Caddo River, are both winners, with Caddo River her first stakes horse.
Pangburn has a juvenile filly of this year by leading sire Into Mischief and a yearling colt by leading freshman sire Nyquist. She was bred to Hard Spun, the sire of Caddo River, for this season.
◗ Darley sire Hard Spun opened the 2021 Oaklawn Park meeting in strong fashion, siring a winner on each of the first three days of the meet.
Hard Spun was represented by Caddo River, and followed up with Silver State, winner of the Fifth Season Stakes on Saturday, and Hidden Scroll, winner of an allowance race on Sunday.
