Cabrera hospitalized following Oaklawn spill

Oaklawn leading rider David Cabrera, who was thrown from his mount in the first race Friday, was to remain in the hospital overnight and likely will not ride through next Saturday, according to his agent, Jose Santos Jr.
Santos said Friday night that Cabrera remains in the intensive-care unit. He was awaiting more specific details on the rider’s condition, but said a concern is internal bleeding. Santos said Cabrera is conscious and moving his extremities. He said there are no known broken bones.
Apprentice Chel-c Bailey also was unseated in the incident near the top of the stretch, but she escaped injury and returned to ride later on Friday’s card.
Both horses involved walked off.
Cabrera leads the Oaklawn standings with 62 wins from 371 mounts through Friday. Francisco Arrieta ranks second in the standings with 49 wins, and Ricardo Santana Jr. is third with 47.
Arrieta was off his mounts Friday. He cut a finger working on a trailer, but is due back soon, according to his agent, Jay Fedor.
Oaklawn races this Saturday and Sunday and then will have just two dates of racing next week, April 15-16, as there is no live racing on Easter, April 17.
Cabrera is scheduled to remain at Oaklawn through the end of the meet on May 8, then will set up shop at Lone Star Park. Santos said earlier this week that Cabrera was to ride the opening-night card at Lone Star on April 28.
Arrieta is headed to Churchill after Oaklawn, Fedor said.
