Caberneigh, Asmussen's senior citizen, seeks second win of year
Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen collects antiques. But we’re not talking Pennsylvania Dutch furniture or coins from foreign lands. Asmussen’s antiques are horses – such as the 12-year-old Caberneigh.
Caberneigh will be looking for his second win of the year in Wednesday night’s eighth race at Remington Park.
Asmussen’s collection of “geriatric genes” was front and center during the Lone Star Park meet that closed in July. They won multiple races for their owner to help lift Asmussen to the owner title – not to mention the training championship. Those same oldies but goodies have continued to perform this meet at Remington.
“They’ve played a big role in my career,” Asmussen said. “Who doesn’t want old-class horses?”
Caberneigh is the oldest of the Asmussen lot. He went 4 for 10 in 2016 and this year has run first, second, or third in five of his seven starts. Caberneigh on Wednesday night is entered in an optional $10,000 claiming race at a mile on turf, a distance he won over in July at Ellis Park.
“I love an old horse like Caberneigh,” Asmussen said. “My oldest son, Keith James, has been galloping the last couple of years and he’s his favorite horse in the whole world.”
Caberneigh is a son of E Dubai who has won 17 races from 97 starts for earnings of $447,598. He placed in four stakes earlier in his career, and over the past few years has been a regular at Sam Houston, Lone Star, and Remington.
Other old-timers performing for the Asmussen barn this meet at Remington include Catfeinated, a 10-year-old who has won four races so far in 2017.
