ARCADIA, Calif. – With the Breeders’ Cup just a fortnight away, major works were the order of the day Saturday morning at Santa Anita, including one that was concurrent with a major decision. Shortly after Catalina Cruiser worked five furlongs in 1:00.60, his trainer, John Sadler, said that Catalina Cruiser would likely head to the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at six furlongs after considering both that race and the Dirt Mile, both on Nov. 2. “We're leaning toward the Sprint,” Sadler said, though he said he “might cross-enter” at pre-entry time on Monday in the Dirt Mile, too. But everything he said indicated the Sprint is where Catalina Cruiser is headed. “His speed figures are faster sprinting, around one turn,” said Sadler, who said he thought Catalina Cruiser “looked super.” “Beautiful, nice and relaxed,” he said. :: BREEDERS’ CUP 2019: See DRF’s special section with top contenders, odds, comments, and more The six-furlong Sprint is shaping up as one of the toughest races of the Nov. 2 card, with Mitole, Imperial Hint, and Shancelot among those expected to start. Catalina Cruiser won the True North and the Pat O'Brien around one turn earlier this year. He also won the San Diego going 1 1/16 miles. The Dirt Mile is headed by Omaha Beach, who was announced as going in that race Thursday. Pre-entries are due Monday, and officially announced Wednesday. At that time, horses can be put in up to two races. Final entries – when one race must be selected – are due the day posts are drawn, Oct. 28. Catalina Cruiser worked at dawn, just after the first renovation break, and was part of a busy morning for Sadler, who sent four of his Breeders’ Cup prospects out for their penultimate drills. Sadler’s quartet also included Higher Power, Ollie’s Candy, and Selcourt. Higher Power, who is running in the Classic, worked just moments after Catalina Cruiser and went five furlongs, in company, in 1:01 under jockey Flavien Prat. He started off about three lengths behind his workmate and was up by about 2 1/2 lengths coming past the finish. He then galloped out another furlong. “He’s fit and ready, right on target,” said Sadler, who won the Classic last year with Accelerate. Later in the morning, Ollie’s Candy (Distaff) zipped five furlongs in 59.40 seconds – the fastest time of 61 at the distance and the only one that was less than one minute – and Selcourt (Filly and Mare Sprint) went a half-mile in 47.80. One of Selcourt’s rivals will be Bellafina, who sharpened her speed with a half-mile work from the gate in 47.20, with Prat up. “She looked really good,” her trainer, Simon Callaghan, said as Bellafina galloped out. The biggest display of pure speed was shown by Shancelot – runner-up to Omaha Beach in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship – who flew a half-mile in 46.80, the best time of 60 at the distance, as he tuned up for the Sprint. Mongolian Groom, upset winner of the Awesome Again, had his first work since that race when traveling a half-mile in 49.20 as he readied for the Classic. Another Classic contender, Draft Pick, went five furlongs in 1:00.60. Peter Eurton, who trains Draft Pick, sent out Giant Expectations for a five-furlong move in 1:00.60 as a prep for the Dirt Mile. Eddie Haskell (49.60) and Stubbins (48.80) both worked a half-mile tuning up for the Turf Sprint. Phil D’Amato had a busy morning. Acclimate, his candidate for the Turf, worked five furlongs on the main track in 1:00.20, and Bowies Hero, who goes in the Mile, worked a half-mile on the inner training track in 50.40. Two other Mile candidates worked five furlongs on the main track, with Bolo going in 1:01.80, and True Valour in 1:02.60. The training track also was utilized by Dan Blacker to put Hit the Road, who goes in the Juvenile Turf on Nov. 1, through a half-mile work in 50.20.
