Business strong on New York Showcase Day

ELMONT, N.Y. – Thanks in large part to fantastic weather, all-sources handle for last weekend’s New York Showcase Day card was $13,181,656, a 36.5 percent increase over last year’s figure of $9,654,389. Ontrack handle was $1,769,859, a 25.6 percent increase over the 2016 figure.
There were 11 races run each year, but in 2016 rain forced all the turf races – including the Mohawk and Ticonderoga stakes – to the main track. Thus, there were 78 betting interests, compared to 92 betting interests this year, with five races run on the turf.
Speaking of turf racing, entering the final week of the Belmont fall meet, there have been 160 turf races run with only three taken off the turf due to inclement weather. The 160 turf races run so far are the second highest run at a Belmont fall meet behind the 191 run in 2013.
