OCEANPORT, N.J. – Burn Control, the least-experienced starter, offers the most upside potential in the $37,800 optional-claiming feature for filly and mare turf sprinters Friday at Monmouth Park. The 10-race Friday card kicks off Labor Day weekend on the Jersey Shore. There will be a live program every afternoon through Monday, with first post at 12:50 p.m. Eastern. Burn Control, a 3-year-old trained by Kathleen DeMasi at Parx Racing, makes only her fourth start. She debuted in June at Parx and won her first two races with authority on the main track. Burn Control then headed to Saratoga for her first taste of grass racing in the $100,000 Coronation Cup for 3-year-old fillies going 5 1/2 furlongs. She finished third behind Stars Above Me, an established turf sprinter in England who was making her U.S. debut for Graham Motion. Burn Control showed some late run up the fence, an effort that suggests she will move forward. Kendrick Carmouche, her only rider, has the return call. The competitive eight-horse field going five furlongs includes three last-out winners, including Girl From Glan, who will try to extend her winning streak to three. KEY CONTENDERS Burn Control (Last 3 Beyers: 72-74-76) ◗ Although she doesn’t have much experience, Burn Control has two wins and a third from only three starts. ◗ Burn Control has the pedigree – by Bernstein out of Essential Fear, an Irish-bred daughter of Pivotal – to show continued improvement on turf. Girl From Glan (Last 3 Beyers: 81-82-47) ◗ She found her career-best stride with a barn change and a switch to grass. She was claimed three starts back by trainer Kelly Breen and proceeded to win her next two races for the new connections while running on grass for the first time. ◗ Girl From Glan has found her niche. Her previous best Beyer Speed Figure on dirt was a 63. She elevated her game into the low 80s in the last two turf victories. What a Party (Last 3 Beyers: 49-84-83) The team of trainer Eddie Plesa Jr. and jockey Paco Lopez are enjoying another standout Monmouth meet. They will try to keep the roll going with What a Party, who was freshened after being badly outrun here in the Klassy Briefcase Stakes in mid-July. ◗ She has three wins and two seconds in seven turf sprints, including a 2-for-3 record at Monmouth. She notched her maiden win here almost a year ago to the day on Aug. 30.
