Buff's Eye View used a strong rally on the backstretch and into the far turn to reach contention in the $75,000 West Virginia Lottery Breeders Classic, then outgamed Opera Nite in a stiff stretch drive to take the seven-furlong race for 3-year-olds by a head.

The West Virginia Lottery was one of nine Breeders Classic stakes on the card.

Owen's Mo showed speed from the outside stall in the eight-horse field to make the lead. On the backstretch, Opera Nite found an opening inside of him and moved up to take the advantage. Opera Nite fought bravely when challenged by Buff's Eye View but just missed.

Buff's Eye View, who is owned by Michael Miller and trained by David Walters, paid $15. He was timed in 1:26.71 under rider Jose Montano and got a Beyer Speed Figure of 67.

There were two jockey objections following the race.

Carlos Marrero aboard Owen's Way lodged an objection against the winner for interference nearing the far turn. It was disallowed.

Jockey Gerald Almodovar on Rucker claimed foul against rider Luis Batista and Owen's Mo for crossing over in front of his mount and Opera Nite in the run to the first turn. On review, the stewards ruled that Owen's Mo did tighten things up on Opera Nite and caused Almodovar to steady Rucker. Owen's Mo was disqualified from fourth and was placed sixth.

Martin Man finished third at 20-1, 2 1/4 lengths behind Opera Nite.

Jaxbradenrishi, the 4-5 favorite, was hesitant while being backed into the gate for the start. He raced in a contending position early but dropped from contention on the far turn.

Moscarelli Memorial: Burnin Ring O Fire stays perfect

Burnin Ring O Fire outran a squadron of 2-year-olds in a rough run to the first turn and then never was headed in the $75,000 Vincent Moscarelli Memorial.

Now perfect in three starts, Burnin Ring O Fire drew clear of pace-pressing Boundtobegood on the second turn, then held off a late run from Midday Man by a half-length.

Boundtobegood, who was unruly at the gate before finally loading, finished third at 25-1.

A son of Limehouse owned and bred by Ray Penington III, Burnin Ring O Fire paid $4.60 and was timed for 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:20.05. Burnin Ring O Fire is trained by Ollie Figgins III and was ridden by J.D. Acosta.

Burnin Ring O Fire won the Henry Mercer Memorial at Charles Town by a half-length in his start prior to the $75,000 Moscarelli. Midday Man came into the race off a 6 3/4-length debut maiden win.

Division of Tourism: Spring Lass upsets

Spring Lass scored a 9-1 upset in the $75,000 Division of Tourism, turning back a challenge from 2-1 second choice See Ya Manana and then holding off late-running Dark Empress to win the seven-furlong race by a half-length.

Owned and trained by Jay Armstrong and ridden by Luis Batista, Spring Lass paid $20.60 in the field of 10 3-year-old fillies and was timed in 1:26.44.

She saved ground while showing the way on a short lead over See Ya Manana, as Nellysford prompted the early pace three wide. Spring Lass put See Ya Manana away entering the stretch and drew well clear.

A daughter of Denis of Cork, Spring Lass improved her record to four wins from five starts.

Im a Tricky One finished third while See Ya Manana faded to fourth. B's Wild Cork, the 3-2 favorite, broke slowly, was checked entering the first turn, and finished fifth.

The start was delayed when For the Crown was fractious in the gate and had to be unloaded and examined by the state veterinarian.

Triple Crown Nutrition: Runco sends out exacta

Trainer Jeff Runco sent out the exacta in the $75,000 Triple Crown Nutrition, the first of nine stakes on West Virginia Breeders Classics night.

Battleground Star, the 1-2 favorite, stayed perfect in three starts. She prompted the early pace outside Sherwood Lady and then drew off to a two-length victory under jockey Arnaldo Bocachica.

Amelia Bedelia finished second, 2 1/2 lengths ahead of 5-2 second choice Parisian Diva.

Battleground Star, a 2-year-old West Virginia-bred daughter of Astrology, was timed for 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:20.45 and paid $3. In her start prior to the Triple Crown Nutrition, she won the Rachel's Turn Stakes by 5 1/4 lengths.

Buffum's Belle, who finished fourth, delayed the start for about five minutes when she unseated her rider behind the gate and ran off.
