DEL MAR, Calif. – Buetane became the latest 2-year-old colt to watch from trainer Bob Baffert’s stable after an exciting win in a maiden race Sunday at Del Mar in his first start. In a way, it was eventful introduction to racing for Buetane, who was ridden by Juan Hernandez. Buetane stalked early leader Cactus Charlie before taking the lead approaching the quarter pole. Buetane pulled clear of five rivals through the stretch to win by 3 1/2 lengths. “He bobbled a little bit at the start,” Hernandez said. “The other horse broke sharp. I had a good trip. He picked it up for me.” After the race, Buetane unseated Hernandez in front of the winner’s circle when the colt ducked quickly to his left. Hernandez was quickly on his feet and back aboard Buetane for the winner’s circle photo. Buetane finished six furlongs in 1:10.17and earned an 83 Beyer Speed Figure. Owned by Zedan Racing, Buetane was purchased for $1.15 million at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s 2-year-olds in training sale in April, one of nine seven-figure sales at the four-day auction, according to sale company data. Baffert has his typical strong team of 2-year-olds this summer. This Sunday, Himika, a six-length winner in her first start at Santa Anita in June, is scheduled to start in the Grade 3 Sorrento Stakes for fillies at six furlongs. Brant, a $3 million purchase earlier this year, won his debut in a maiden race at 5 1/2 furlongs by 5 1/4 lengths with a 101 Beyer on July 26.
