LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Bubble Rock looks like lone speed in the Mrs. Revere Stakes, but she better just keep on going. Otherwise, a whole gang of 3-year-old fillies could be nipping at her heels in what shapes up as a highly competitive renewal of the Grade 2 turf race. “We’ve got a tactical edge,” said Brad Cox, who trains Bubble Rock for Shortleaf Stable, “but she’s going to have to follow through. It sure looks like they’ll be coming after us.” Indeed, there might be a crowd at the furlong grounds as a field of 11 rolls down the stretch Friday in the $300,000 Mrs. Revere, the ninth of 12 races on Clark Day at Churchill Downs. Including Bubble Rock, most have earned career-best Beyer Speed Figures in the mid-80s range, with no clear-cut standout and not many throwouts among the entire group. :: DRF Black Friday Sale: Save 20% on DRF PPs, Clocker Reports, and other handicapping essentials Bubble Rock, who set the pace to deep stretch in the Grade 3 Valley View at Keeneland before settling for fourth, will break from post 4 under Joel Rosario in the 1 1/16-mile Mrs. Revere. California Angel (post 6, Tyler Gaffalione) was among those who passed her late in that Oct. 28 race and probably will come a lukewarm favorite here when adding the meet’s leading jockey. There’s plenty to choose from among the rest. Kenny McPeek has a live trio led by Lady Puchi (post 3, Julien Leparoux) and Lovely Princess (post 7, Brian Hernandez Jr.), both of them first-level allowance winners over the Keeneland turf last month; the third McPeek starter is Sweet Lady Ivanka (post 5, Corey Lanerie), a last-out maiden winner over the Churchill turf in her grass debut. Vicki Oliver also has an interesting pair with Take a Stand (post 1, Declan Cannon) trying the grass again and She’s Gone (post 2, Rafael Bejarano) exiting a decent effort in the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup. The others are Fancy Martini (post 8, Luis Saez), whose 54-1 stunner over the Keeneland turf led a record-paying 10-cent superfecta of $72,863; Have a Good Day (post 9, Florent Geroux), an Irish-bred stretching out from turf sprints; Quality Star (post 10, Joe Talamo), a flashy last-out maiden winner over the Keeneland turf; and Joyful Applause (post 11, Edgar Morales), second at nearly 18-1 in a turf allowance earlier at this meet. This is the 31st Mrs. Revere, which honors the Bill Mott-trained filly who won 6 of 12 starts at Churchill during the pre-turf era of the mid-1980s for Hiram Polk and the late David Richardson. The Mrs. Revere was not run last fall with the turf course being unavailable. Through last weekend, five races have been run at this fall meet over a Bermuda-hybrid turf that appears to have cleared a major hurdle. Churchill officials say the upcoming off-season should have the course in terrific shape for when racing resumes here next April. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
