SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – With only three starts under his belt, Unmatched Wisdom will be the least experienced runner of the eight 3-year-olds expected to be entered Sunday in the Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers Stakes to be run here on Aug. 24. But with a perfect 3-for-3 record and the services of leading rider Irad Ortiz Jr. for the first time, he could be one of the more intriguing runners in the field. Friday, Unmatched Wisdom put in his final workout for the Travers when Ortiz guided him through a five-furlong move over the main track that Daily Racing Form timed in 1:00.50. Unmatched Wisdom, started just off the maiden Commander of Truth and went in splits of 13.25 seconds for the opening furlong, 25.11 for the quarter, and 36.90 for three furlongs. He galloped out six furlongs in 1:13.40. The work came following the 8:45 a.m. renovation break over a track that had some moisture in it, but that was in better-than-expected condition following Thursday’s persistent rain during the races. :: Gain a competitive edge at Saratoga with DRF's premier handicapping data — purchase our meet packages today and bet with confidence. “I was very, very pleased with the work,” trainer Chad Brown said. “It worked out well. [NYRA’s director/racing surfaces] Glen Kozak had the track perfect after the break, a touch quick because of the moisture in it. I really wanted to work this horse eight days out because I wanted to do something a little longer with him. He’s had a couple of easy works since [winning] the Curlin. He couldn’t have gone better for at least what I was looking for.” Unmatched Wisdom, a son of Cairo Prince, didn’t debut until May 10, when he won a maiden race at Aqueduct by 6 3/4 lengths. He followed that with a 5 3/4-length allowance win, also at Aqueduct, on June 22 before winning the Curlin at Saratoga by one length in front-running fashion, which was out of his normal running style. “If he gets a target, he’s going to give us his best at least,” Brown said. “Whether it’s good enough we’ll see. It’s a big step.” Ortiz will ride Unmatched Wisdom for the first time because his regular rider, Flavien Prat, is committed to ride Sierra Leone, also trained by Brown. Sierra Leone, the Grade 1 Blue Grass winner, has been consistent through the spring and summer finishing second in the Kentucky Derby, third in the Belmont Stakes, and second in the Jim Dandy. Brown was expected to work Sierra Leone on Saturday. Corporate Power, who finished second to Unmatched Wisdom in the Curlin, was the other Travers starter to work Friday morning. Going at 7:30 a.m. over the Oklahoma training track, Corporate Power went five furlongs from the half-mile pole in 1:00.67, according to DRF. He worked on the inside of the 3-year-old maiden Act of Mutiny. Corporate Power, a son of Curlin, won the Sir Barton Stakes at Pimlico in May before finishing a length back of Unmatched Wisdom in the Curlin, where he had to make the first move on that loose-on-the-lead runner. Both of those races have come with the addition of blinkers. “I thought his Curlin was a good race,” trainer Shug McGaughey said. “We had to do all the work chasing him with that horse being on the lead by himself. If we get a pace, I do think he’s a true mile-and-a-quarter horse. Whether he’s good enough, who knows?” Corporate Power will have the services of seven-time Travers winning jockey Javier Castellano. The other six expected Travers entrants – Batten Down, Dornoch, Fierceness, Honor Marie, Sierra Leone, and Thorpedo Anna, were all expected to work on Saturday. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
