Brown works 18 over muddy training track

ELMONT, N.Y. - Trainer Chad Brown worked 18 horses, 10 of whom will be participating in graded stakes next weekend between New York and California, over a muddy training track Sunday morning at Belmont Park.
Brown sent out Patternrecognition and Timeline for solo workouts in preparation for Saturday’s Grade 1, $750,000 Cigar Mile at Aqueduct.
Patternrecognition, winner of the Grade 2 Kelso Handicap on Sept. 22, breezed a half-mile in 50.11 seconds, going in quarter splits of 25.22 seconds and 24.89. Timeline, third in the Kelso but winner of the Grade 3 Peter Pan as a 3-year-old, worked a half-mile in 49.93 seconds, going his final quarter in 24.93 seconds.
The training track was muddy and harrowed following the 9 a.m. renovation break.
“I feel like they didn’t need to do too much today in company,” Brown said when asked why those two horses worked without company. Patternrecognition, who will be ridden by Jose Ortiz in the Cigar, brings a two-race winning streak into the race.
“He’s a horse that runs well fresh with proper rest,” Brown said. “The horse seems to coming into the Cigar in good shape.”
John Velazquez will ride Timeline for the first time. Javier Castellano, Timeline’s regular rider, is committed to Copper Town for trainer Todd Pletcher.
As many as 11 horses are expected for the Cigar Mile including the well-traveled 3-year-old Mendelssohn, most recently fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Others expected include Name Changer, No Dozing, Pat on the Back, Stan the Man, Sunny Ridge, and True Timber. Promises Fulfilled is possible.
Network Effect, runner-up in the Grade 3 Nashua Stakes for Brown, worked a half-mile in 50.19 seconds, finishing about a length in front of the maiden 2-year-old Motagally. Network Effect is pointing to Saturday’s Grade 2, $250,000 Remsen Stakes.
Pacific Wind and Your Love worked a half-mile together in 49.65 seconds, getting their final quarter in 24.45 seconds in preparation for a start in next Saturday’s Grade 3, $250,000 Go for Wand Handicap. The Go for Wand is a one-turn mile, a configuration at which Pacific Wind won the Grade 2 Ruffian earlier this year at Belmont.
Your Love, who won the Shine Again at seven furlongs at Saratoga, will be trying one mile for the first time.
“She acts like she can get the mile,” Brown said.
Brown also worked five horses that he is planning to ship to Southern California for two Grade 1 stakes next weekend at Del Mar.
Raging Bull and Instilled Regard worked a half-mile together in 50.17 seconds in preparation for a start in Saturday’s Grade 1 Hollywood Derby for 3-year-old males on turf.
“They’re just doing maintenance stuff,” Brown said. “Some horses handle it better than others. It’s not Raging Bull’s favorite track, I know that, but I just couldn’t get him over that main track anymore, but he did what he had to do. He’s a fit horse.”
Instilled Regard, fourth in the Kentucky Derby but last in the Pennsylvania Derby, will be trying turf for the first time in the Hollywood Derby.
“He’s trained fine on the dirt, but he gave me the feel he might be looking for the grass and now’s the time to try it,” Brown said. “He’s fresh, he’s got some nice works. We did get a chance to work him on the grass before they closed the grass course for the year and he did well.”
Florent Geroux will ride Instilled Regard while Joel Rosario will be aboard Raging Bull.
Brown will send the trio of Uni, Quidura and Rymska to next Sunday’s Grade 1 Matriarch, a one-mile race he won last year with Off Limits.
Uni, 3 for 3 this year including a victory in the Grade 3 Noble Damsel, and Quidura, winner of the Grade 2 Ballston Spa, worked a half-mile together in 50.64 seconds over the training track, getting their final quarter in 25.01 seconds.
Rymska, coming off a win in the Grade 3 Athenia, went a half-mile in 50.59 seconds in company with Toocooltodance, a 3-year-old filly who has one win and four seconds from five starts.
Brown said Irad Ortiz Jr. will ride Rymska, Jose Ortiz will be on Quidura, and Rosario rides Uni.
