Chad Brown has four entrants in the Shadwell Turf Mile on Saturday at Keeneland, but Brown found no strength in numbers Aug. 22 at Saratoga. Brown ran four in the Fourstardave, a Grade 1, one-mile turf race like the Shadwell. The quartet swept places 5 through 8. “All four of my horses ran so bad,” Brown said. “It was jaw-dropping. I never experienced that before.” Something else Brown hasn’t experienced: Winning the $750,000 Shadwell. His four chances Saturday, from inside out, are Without Parole, Raging Bull, Flavius, and Analyze It. :: Get DRF Betting Strategies for Keeneland’s Saturday card Without Parole was sixth in the Fourstardave, Raging Bull fifth, neither with any obvious excuse. Both raced July 10 at Keeneland in the Grade 1 Maker’s Mark Mile, where Raging Bull was third, Without Parole fourth. Flavius comes off a win in the Tourist Mile at Kentucky Downs, while Analyze It, Brown’s leading hope in the Shadwell, notched an eye-catching last-out win in the Red Bank at Monmouth. Eleven were entered in the Shadwell, the 10th of 11 races on Keeneland’s Saturday program, with a first post 1:05 p.m. Eastern. Also on the menu: the Grade 1 First Lady for fillies and mares, another turf mile; the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity for 2-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles on dirt; the Grade 2 Thoroughbred Club of America for female dirt sprinters; and the Grade 2 Woodford, a turf sprint. All stakes save the Woodford are part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series. The local forecast calls for clear skies and a high of 63. The Breeders’ Cup will be held at Keeneland next month, and Brown obviously has the BC Mile in mind for his Shadwell entrants. Without Parole finished third in the 2019 BC Mile, but Analyze It, third in the 2018 BC Mile, holds the most current appeal among Brown’s foursome. Analyze It was a top 2-year-old and an excellent 3-year-old of 2018, when he finished a close second three times in races from 1 1/8 miles to 1 1/4 miles, farther than ideal for him. Analyze It didn’t start between his 2018 BC Mile and Sept. 5, when he blasted home an easy winner at Monmouth. Analyze It, by Point of Entry, got on a steady work schedule during the summer of 2019, but Brown had to pull the plug. “His long break is entirely due to foot problems,” said Brown, describing the issue as “mainly quarter cracks.” “It’s been a real struggle,” he said, “but we feel like he’s doing well right now. He seems pretty solid. He’s grown into a real powerful horse. If he can stay together, the horse is formidable in this race and in the Breeders’ Cup.” Analyze It has controllable speed and a sharp turn of foot that was on display in the Red Bank. He finished fourth with a wide trip in the 2018 Shadwell, but that spring easily won the Transylvania over this tricky, sand-based grass course. Flavius, a 5-year-old Irish import with only seven career starts, threw hints in his first three American starts before breaking through at Kentucky Downs last month. “I think that last race is what he is,” Brown said. “He’s always trained like he had an enormous amount of ability.” :: Want to get your Past Performances for free? Raging Bull rose to the top of the North American miler ranks by winning the Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita in May by more than two lengths with a gaudy 105 Beyer Speed Figure, but Raging Bull, a one-run closer, was flattered that day by an exceptionally strong pace. He finished a no-excuse third, beaten a neck, as the strong favorite in the Maker’s Mark, and after Raging Bull’s subpar Fourstardave performance, Brown removes his blinkers for the Shadwell. Without Parole turned in a sharp U.S. debut, his first start on Lasix, when beaten only by Uni and Got Stormy over fast Santa Anita ground in the BC Mile last fall. He had considerable trouble over the same course running third in the Shoemaker and was beaten by threee-quarters of a length finishing fourth in the Maker’s Mark before his sixth in the Fourstardave, run over turf rated good. Without Parole might need a course as fast and firm as Santa Anita’s to show his best. It was Halladay who won the Fourstardave, his first Grade 1, leading wire to wire under Luis Saez, who rides him Saturday. Halladay, making his Keeneland debut, ran his two best races – the Fourstardave and the Sunshine Forever at Gulfstream in May – when allowed to roll on the lead. “We’ve worked through the course of the year trying to get him to settle, but we’re aware most of his wins have been when he’s forwardly placed,” said trainer Todd Pletcher, who won the 2005 Shadwell with Host. “We’ll let him do his thing and see how it plays out. He’s trained every bit as well as he ever has.” Halladay breaks from post 2 and figures to take pressure from two outside-drawn horses, Spectacular Gem and Ivar. Ivar, a star in his native Argentina and third behind Flavius at Kentucky Downs, could stick around a long time. Parlor ran the race of his life by a considerable margin finishing second by a nose three months ago in the Maker’s Mark. Bowie’s Hero won the 2019 Shadwell but is winless in four starts since and hasn’t looked like the same horse this year. Casa Creed, with a cozy draw on the rail, is a quietly improving Bill Mott-trained 4-year-old who could sneak into a top-three finish. Born Great won twice at the Kentucky Downs meet but jumps into deep water for his fourth career start.
