Brown looks to continue hot streak in Monday allowance
Nobody wins every race, but New York-based trainer Chad Brown sure has come close to perfection with the small number of horses he has shipped to Parx Racing this season.
Brown has gone 7 for 8 at Parx, with the lone blemish a second-place finish by a horse returning from a 121-day layoff May 27.
Brown has a big shot to continue his hot hand in suburban Philadelphia when he brings in recent winner Bemata for Monday’s $46,000 feature at 6 1/2 furlongs.
The 4-year-old Bemata, coming off a first-level allowance victory May 15 at Belmont Park, heads a group of nine older horses in the ninth race, a second-level optional $25,000 claimer. Post time is 4:01 p.m. Eastern.
Of the seven winners Brown has saddled at Parx in 2014, five were maidens, and the other two came in races similar to Monday’s feature. Over the past two years, Brown is a robust 17 for 37 (46 percent) at Parx, with a remarkable 78 percent of those runners finishing in the money.
Bemata, claimed for $35,000 last December, earned an 87 Beyer Speed Figure for his last-out victory, close to the par of 89 for Monday’s class level. But several of his rivals have recorded similar figures and stand a reasonable chance of beating the 5-2 morning line favorite.
Mr. Beer Goggles romped by 6 1/2 lengths at this same level last time out. Although that race was way back in December, Mr. Beer Goggles returned from a 323-day vacation last fall to win going six furlongs.
Zipped Code has recorded four straight Beyers between 86 and 93, including a win three starts ago and a runner-up finish in a restricted stakes five weeks ago. He has been third or better in 9 of 10 lifetime starts locally.
Monty Hall has a win and nose loss at this same level within his past three races. He returns to his home track after getting used up in an early pace battle in a third-level optional $32,000 claimer at Penn National in early May.
Mystical Tarp rates as a contender if you’re willing to disregard his poor performance in a five-furlong sprint on the Preakness undercard. Two starts ago, at the same level and distance as Monday’s race, Mystical Tarp led until deep stretch and was beaten just a length at 15-1 odds.
