LEXINGTON, Ky. – Batting over .500 is virtually impossible in baseball and in horse racing, at least in the long term. Still, the occasional hot streak will take a hitter or horse trainer into the stratosphere and get fans’ tongues wagging. That scenario certainly fit Chad Brown last spring at Keeneland. Brown won with 12 of his 23 starters, most of them in high-level races. His stable earned a meet-leading $1.54 million, and he fell just one win shy of Brad Cox and Wesley Ward, who tied for leading trainer. It was an exceptional three weeks indeed for a trainer who went on to earn the Eclipse Award for top trainer for a third straight year. In transitioning his stable from Florida to New York this month, Brown is using a familiar blueprint: He has diverted 32 of his better horses to Keeneland, where their presence once again will be highly conspicuous. Between the first two days of the meet, Brown had five entries, all of them major contenders in allowances: Instilled Regard on Thursday, followed by Environs, Projected, Offering Plan, and U S Navy Cross on Friday. They’re among the first wave of Brown horses to compete in maiden-special races or allowances. The daughter of Violence is 2 for 2, having won the Feb. 2 Forward Gal at Gulfstream Park in her last start. “I’m thinking about cross-entering,” Brown said this week by phone while en route to New York. As for Brown’s other stakes plans: Clause and Regal Glory for the Appalachian on Sunday; Raging Bull for the April 12 Maker’s 46 Mile; the trio of Onthemoonagain, Rushing Fall, and Rymska for the April 13 Jenny Wiley; and Electric Forest for the April 19 Doubledogdare. Brown said most of the horses he intends to run during Kentucky Derby week at Churchill Downs will be flown from South Florida to Kentucky on April 22. Foremost among them are Bricks and Mortar for the Old Forester Turf Classic, Newspaperofrecord for the Edgewood, and Digital Age for the American Turf. Brown said he is considering Separationofpowers for the Humana Distaff off a layoff of more than seven months, adding he might also have Ticonderoga for the Old Forester and Cambier Parc for the Edgewood. Among the Brown stars who won’t be racing in Kentucky over the next month but remain active in various capacities, either in Florida or New York, are Uni, Sistercharlie, Pacific Wind, Wow Cat, Robert Bruce, Complexity, and Standard Deviation. Brown was unsure of how frequently he will be in town while his assistant Jose Hernandez oversees his Keeneland string. “We got a lot of work done in Florida this winter and should be set up well for another good spring there,” he said.
