Brown has numbers going for him in Pennine Ridge

ELMONT, N.Y. – Trainer Chad Brown apparently will utilize the strength-in-numbers approach when it comes to Saturday’s $200,000 Pennine Ridge Stakes at Belmont Park. He has three of the eight horses entered Wednesday for Saturday’s 1 1/8-mile turf race for 3-year-olds.
Brown’s trio comprises the coupled entry of Takeover Target and Startup Nation for owners Klaravich Stables and Bill Lawrence and Chief Kitten for Ken and Sarah Ramsey. That trio will take on Divisidero, who charged from well off the pace to win the Grade 2 American Turf Stakes at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby Day.
Takeover Target, a son of Harlan’s Holiday, is 2 for 2, having won his debut last October at Belmont and then a first-level allowance race May 7 at Belmont. Irad Ortiz Jr. is named to ride Takeover Target from post 6.
Startup Nation, a New York-bred son of Temple City, won the first two starts of his career, including the Grade 2 With Anticipation at Saratoga. He has not run since finishing 11th in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf last October at Santa Anita.
Chief Kitten, a New York-bred son of Kitten’s Joy, is 2 for 6 and most recently finished third in the Woodhaven Stakes at Aqueduct.
Completing the field are Eh Cumpari, the winner of the Grade 3 Palm Beach Stakes at Gulfstream, Rock Eagle, World Approval, and Made in Detroit.
