Brown has horses for Hollywood Derby, Matriarch at Del Mar

ARCADIA, Calif. – Top trainer Chad Brown has won the Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes the last two years, and two of the last three runnings of the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby at Del Mar’s fall meeting.

This year, Brown is likely to have another group of runners at Del Mar for those major stakes. The Del Mar autumn meeting begins on Friday.

Brown said earlier this week that Digital Age, a two-time stakes winner in the spring; Standard Deviation, who was third in the Grade 2 Hill Prince Stakes at Belmont Park on Oct. 5; and Valid Point, who won the Grade 1 Secretariat Stakes at Arlington Park in August, will be considered for the $300,000 Hollywood Derby at 1 1/8 miles on Nov. 30.

The field for the $300,000 Matriarch Stakes for fillies and mares at a mile on Dec. 1 may include Significant Form, who has won three stakes this year at Belmont Park and Saratoga for Brown.

The Matriarch Stakes field may include two runners trained by Brad Cox in Kentucky – Juliet Foxtrot and Beau Recall.

Juliet Foxtrot won the Grade 3 Modesty Handicap at Arlington Park in July, and was second by a nose in a thrilling running of the Grade 2 John Mabee Stakes at Del Mar on Aug. 31. Beau Recall won the Grade 2 Yellow Ribbon Stakes at Del Mar on Aug. 3 and was second in the Grade 1 Rodeo Drive Stakes at Santa Anita on Sept. 28.

There are eight graded stakes at Del Mar on the final four days of the meeting, from Nov. 28 to Dec. 1. Brown said he may send Princesa Caroline to the Grade 3 Jimmy Durante Stakes at a mile on turf for 2-year-old fillies on Nov. 30.

Princesa Caroline, a maiden race winner on turf at Belmont Park in September, was pre-entered for Friday’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, but was not entered because of illness.
