Brown duo of Haughty, Customer List begin campaigns in Penn Oaks

Chad Brown sends out a strong uncoupled entry Friday in Penn National’s $150,000 Penn Oaks for 3-year-old fillies at one mile on turf. Both horses are coming off extended layoffs.
Haughty, a daughter of Empire Maker, finished first in her debut on Sept. 17 at Belmont Park, but was disqualified and placed third. She graduated on Oct. 17 at Keeneland before running third, beaten three-quarters of a length, 19 days later in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar.
“I always thought she was one of the main contenders for the Juvenile Fillies Turf before I ran her, but the thing that hurt me was the short rest,” Brown said Tuesday morning. “I was playing catch-up after the disqualification first-time out, and it really set me back.”
Brown admitted that Haughty is getting a late start this year.
“She was ready to run about a month ago and had a minor illness,” he said. “I had to miss a race, but I believe we have her ready.”
Brown also trains Customer List, a Wootton Bassett filly that was purchased for $294,346 in France as a yearling. Customer List has won her only start, a maiden special weight Sept. 19 at Monmouth Park.

“Don’t be fooled that I ran her at Monmouth,” Brown said. “I was separating horses at that time of the year.”
Brown planned on running Customer List in a stakes race at Keeneland.
“She got off the van with a 103 temperature and was in the clinic for a month,” Brown said. “She almost died. Luckily, we gave her plenty of farm time after that.”
As with Haughty, Brown always had high hopes for Customer List.
“I thought she was one of our three best chances for the Juvenile Fillies Turf before she debuted,” he said.
Belacqua, a winner in 2 of 3 starts over all-weather surfaces in England, makes her North American and turf debut. A daughter of Havana Gold owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Belacqua hasn’t raced since Dec. 18, but has been training regularly since mid-March for Graham Motion, one of the most potent layoff trainers in the game.
Alittleloveandluck, winner of Gulfstream Park’s Ginger Brew on New Year’s Day, enters after a runner-up effort in the Horseshoe Indianapolis Stakes on May 18. A daughter of Arrogate, she seems very comfortable at this distance.
Morning Matcha, a stakes winner on dirt for trainer Butch Reid, tries turf for the first time.
Reid feels Morning Matcha will handle grass “based on the way she goes, and I think it will give her some extra support behind. Also, there won’t be nearly the kickback, so I don’t think she’ll drop back as far as she seems to do in the dirt races.”
Morning Matcha recently finished sixth in the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan on May 20 at Pimlico after breaking from post 13.
Irie Empress also is entered.
With Anticipation Stakes
Buy Land and See is the 9-5 morning-line favorite in the $100,000 With Anticipation for Pennsylvania-breds at 1 1/16 miles on turf.
The winner of the Awad at Belmont as a 2-year-old, Buy Land and See has finished second in all three starts this year at 5. Most recently, he was beaten a nose in a second-level allowance with a $62,500 claiming option May 13 at Belmont.
You Must Chill, a winner in four of his last five races on dirt, captured the Alphabet Soup Handicap over boggy turf last fall at Parx Racing.

Lyphard Stakes
Love in the Air, purchased for $130,000 last summer, will try to convert her excellent dirt form to turf in the $100,000 Lyphard for Pennsylvania-bred fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles. A 10-length winner of a first-level allowance with a $16,000 claiming option going six furlongs on Monmouth dirt May 8, Love in the Air hit the board without winning in her three prior grass appearances.
Funwhileitlasted dominated an off-turf starter allowance with a $25,000 claiming option at Laurel Park in her seasonal debut April 14. She was twice stakes-placed on turf in New York last year.
Danzig Stakes
Uncle Buddy, a recent winner when entered for a $62,500 claiming option at Laurel, is the tepid 7-2 morning-line favorite in the $100,000 Danzig for 3-year-old Pennsylvania-breds at six furlongs on dirt. Stakes-placed at 2, he figures to face stiff challenges from the likes of Nimitz Class, Jean Valjean, and Allevare.
New Start Stakes
Bazinga C and You Look Cold should vie for favoritism in the $100,000 New Start for Pennsylvania-bred 3-year-old fillies at six furlongs Bazinga C has won three in a row but cuts back in distance from 1 1/16 miles. You Look Cold, a stakes winner over Presque Isle Down’s Tapeta surface last summer, recently grabbed a first-level allowance with a $50,000 claiming option on Parx dirt last month.
