SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - When you’re hot, you’re hot! Chad Brown completed a memorable two days of racing in style on Thursday with Rastafara registering a popular 1 1/2-length victory over Third Draft in the $120,000 Riskaverse Stakes. The Riskaverse was Brown’s eighth winner in just over 24 hours to blow open what had been a tight three-man race for the Saratoga training title when the week began. Rastafara, who broke her maiden in her third career start earlier in the meet, chased the pace of a rank and rapid Love and Money before readily inheriting the lead from that rival once settling into the stretch. Rastafara edged clear at that point before maintaining a safe advantage over Third Draft under a rousing ride by Irad Ortiz Jr. Third Draft, forwardly placed from the outset, took a run at the winner through mid-stretch but proved no match while easily second best. Keeper of Time ran down Magisterium in the final yards to finish third in her U.S. debut. The Irish-bred Rastafara is owned by Peter Brant. She completed one mile over a firm course in 1:35.53 and paid $6.20 as the favorite in the Riskaverse, which was carded for 3-year-old fillies who had never won a stakes at a mile or over. “These things run in cycles a lot and when you do it long enough you have to realize you can’t get too high or too low,” said Brown referring to his recent hot streak. “We started off the meet a little slow but right now we’re in a really good groove in all different divisions. Turf, dirt, long, short, young, old. “And the horses are really ready. It’s a testament to my staff and the owners for having patience and seeing it through. And these jockeys. A handful of these jockeys participated in this streak the last couple of days.” Brown said he had recognized Rastafara as a potential star early in her career. “This is a filly we thought a lot of, unfortunately she had some minor issues and we had to stop on her at 2,” said Brown. “Mr. Brant was so patient with her and we finally brought her back and my theory is when they finally break their maiden at 3, and we thought they were amongst the top of their group when younger, the thought is to put them into stakes races right away and get them against their own age group. “As long as she stays healthy, she really has a bright future ahead of her.”
