Brown applauds DeVaux for Derby win while thinking of Paladin

Barbara D. Livingston Trainer Cherie DeVaux, a former assistant to Chad Brown, became the first female trainer to win the Kentucky Derby.

Trainer Chad Brown said Golden Tempo’s victory in the Kentucky Derby was well-deserved by his former assistant Cherie DeVaux, who became the first female trainer to win the Kentucky Derby. DeVaux went out on her own in 2018 after working as Brown’s New York assistant for eight years.

“She was always an extremely hard worker,” Brown said. “She has carefully managed that horse, he’s been consistent. She made an equipment change a couple of races ago and the horse has maintained a consistent pattern and that’s the sign of a well-managed horse. Well deserved to her and her team, they work hard.”

Emerging Market, who finished 10th in the Kentucky Derby, was one of two horses Brown sent to Louisiana this winter who won stakes at Fair Grounds, both of whom beat Golden Tempo. Emerging Market won the Louisiana Derby, a race in which Golden Tempo finished third.

Earlier in the meet, the Brown-trained Paladin won the Grade 2 Risen Star, a race in which Golden Tempo also finished third. Paladin beat Renegade, trained by Todd Pletcher, in last year’s Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct. Renegade finished second in the Kentucky Derby.

Brown said Emerging Market lost a front shoe during the running of the race and had some other scrapes on him, but otherwise came out of the race in good shape.

“I haven’t occupied my mind too much exiting this Derby going over my trip [with Emerging Market], a portion of that has been occupied thinking of Paladin, to be honest with you,” Brown said. “Because the race set up for him and he beat both those horses. That’s horse racing. I’m not the only one that’s dealt with that.”

Brown pointed out that last year trainer Brad Cox couldn’t run Tappan Street in the Derby after he got injured in his final workout. The Kentucky Derby was won by Sovereignty, who Tappan Street had beaten in the Grade 1 Florida Derby five weeks earlier.
